Granny Square a Week; Week Twenty Six

This week's square is off season!

I know, I know, we just started summer, but this pattern is just too pretty to keep in the cold months. It is a pattern for a pot holder but if you make one, it can easily be used for a granny square. This works up fairly quickly, with big pay off.

No adjustments at all, I worked straight until the last round.

Fantastic joining technique!

I came across this joining technique today and I have to share it with everyone. It is super easy and it is COMPLETELY invisible. I have been looking for one and the ones I found was not very  invisible or well written. THIS one, however is like a beacon of light shining down on me!

I love this week's square! But I am often drawn more to the flower squares than any other one. You should have seen my granny square list when I first started. More than 3/4 of it was floral in theme!

There are no adjustments, a word of advice about round 5: you will have to make this in 2 spots. You will start it in the chain 4 space before by making the first leg of the cluster there, you then move to the next chain 4 space to make the next 4 legs of the cluster. Only place this is different is the last one-you make 1 in the space before, 3 in the next space and 1 in the next space, which should be where you began the row, chain 4 and slip stitch.

Also, I only did to round 7, mostly due to size

Granny Square A Week-Week Twenty Four

This week's square is a bit more challenging. Mostly because the pattern isn't written out as a traditional pattern, but with pictures and some charting.

Granny Square Butterfly by Luna

Some notes and adjustments:
1-All the work in round 2 through the end are done in the chain 2 spaces from the row below.

2-You will chain 3 at the beginning of each round, which counts as a double crochet. So in round 1, you will start with chain 3, then you will do 2 double crochet and chain 2, from then on you will do 3 double crochet and chain 2. In round 3, you will do a chain 3, 3 double crochet, chain 2, and then 4 double crochet, etc.

2-Round 2, you will do 3 double crochets, chain 2 and then 3 double crochets in the same stitch.

3-Round 3, you slip stitch to the chain 2 space in between the 2 sets of 3 double crochet done in the same stitch in the previous round, that is where you will do the double crochets for this round. The slip stitch will be placed in between the sets of 3dc/chain2/3dc from the previous round.

4- A picot stitch is worked like this-chain 3, place your hook into the 3rd chain from the hook, yarn over, pull through both loops, continue to work your double crochet stitches.

5-Round 5 I changed slightly. I worked it exactly as the instructions said with my main colors, then tweaked it slightly with my secondary colors-I did one less dc and also chained 3 in the corner. I like the way it came out with the secondary colors better, so I wiill share that with you:

• Attach yarn and chain 3 in the upper corner of the back part of the butterfly, 2 dc, chain 3, 3 dc. *chain 2, 3 dc in the next chain 2 space, chain 2 , 3 dc in the next chain 2 space on the other wing of the butterfly.Chain 2, 3 dc chain 3, 3 dc in the corner, chain 2, 3 dc in the next chain 2 space, chain 2, 3 dc in the next chain 2 space, chain 2* 3 dc, chain 3 and 3 dc in the corner. Repeat from * to *, slip stitch in top  of chain 

6-I only worked up to Round 6..

7-When tying the  body with yarn, I went up through the hole between the middle of the butterfly and where it was attached together at the bottom of the wings (compare my pictures and the pattern writer's).  No reason, I just liked it better.

I know it is a lot of corrections, but it really is relatively easy to work! And it comes out really adorable.

And interesting pattern this week. One of those looks hard but is pretty simple.

No real adjustments made, just a word of caution to pay attention to Round 5 very carefully-I kept getting slipped up because I kept missing the  commas, so I was missing stitches and it came out too short! But that was my fault, the pattern is written very well!

This was done with Red Heart Super Saver in Claret, Vanna's Choice in Silver Heather and the black yarn is a random ball I had.

A little more of a challenge this week with a few different specialty stitches

Simple 10 Petal Afghan Square by Joyce Lewis

She has written this pattern beautifully and it is very easy to follow, even with the special stitches. The only changes I made were that I stopped at round 8 and I did not do round 10 (which is an embellishment round for the front of the square). Other than that, I worked it up pretty quickly!

This week is a wee bit more challenging.

The adjustments are as follows:

• I skipped the last row since I made the size I needed with just 5 rows.

• Round 4 is very tricky. The way it is written had me a little confused but I figured it out: when you did round 3, you went down 2 rounds and crocheted OVER the chain 3 space they are talking about. So what you need to do is push the 2 dc  from round 3 over and do your 2 treble crochet in the stitch that is UNDER those 2 dc. It is easy when you do it in 2 colors, you know to push aside color B and do your treble crochet in the stitch that is the same color you are working with (color A). I took pictures of the process. I am not sure it will help but it could!

• Round 5 is confusing how it is written as well, so I redid it this way: Slip stitch to corner, chain 3, 1 dc, chain 2, 2 dc, *dc in each of the next 3 dc from the row below, 3 dc in the chain 3 space, a dc in each tr stitch from the last row (4 dc in total), 3 dc in the chain space, dc in the next 3 dc from the row below.** In corner space, 2 dc, chain 2, 2 dc*  Follow * to * until you come to your last side where you follow from * to **. Slip stitch in the top of the chain 3.

• Also it is not written in the pattern, but when you start a new row, you need to chain 3 for dcin order for it to come out correctly and THEN remove one DC since the chain 3 counts as 1 double crochet. For example, you start row 1 with 3 chains and then you do 2 double crochet, chain 2, then you continue with 3 double crochet, chain 2. Row 2, you chain 3 then you do 2 double crochet cluster stitches, chain 6 then do 3 double crochet cluster stitches, etc. Row 3 you slip stitch to corner and do 3 chain and 3 double crochet, chain 3 and do 4 double crochet and carry on with the pattern. Yes it is a bit of a pain but the  square comes out beautiful!
